The economy of Gambia is
primarily agrarian, with groundnuts accounting for 50% of total
exports. Cotton and citrus fruits are also cultivated for export.
Forestry and fishing are also important export earners. Rice, millet,
and maize are the main staples, but the Gambia is still deficient in
rice and other food grain production and has to import large quantities
of food and petroleum products. There are no viable minerals deposits
although surveys have located oil deposits that are yet to be tapped.
The small-scale sector is dominated by agro-industries; soft drink and
construction material are produced for the domestic market. The
Gambia’s main export partners are Hong Kong, Senegal, Japan, France,
UK, Indonesia and Switzerland. Its main import partners are China, Cote
d’Ivoire, UK, France and Indonesia.
