Currency & Costs

The Gambian currency is known as the ‘Dalasi’. There are no restrictions on its import and export. Entrance fees to museums, galleries and national parks are inexpensive. Transportation is reasonable but you may have to pay a little extra for baggage. Restaurants and hotels catering to every budget are available in the main towns, while local guesthouses and “chophouses” (small eating joints) will be your only choice in upcountry areas.

Banks & Money Changers

There are banks in the major cities such as Banjul, Bakau and Serekunda. There are banks at Banjul airport, and if they are closed the police will help you find the nearest moneychanger. The thriving black market for changing currency is officially discouraged. Exchange rates have been the same for a number of years now and the Dalasi is 5% more in the black market. Banks are open Monday to Thursday 8 am-1 pm, Friday 8 am-11 am and is usually closed on Saturday and Sunday.
