Situated on MacCarthy
island, Georgetown is best reached from the South bank
road by bus or transport from Serekunda or Soma. You may
have to go a few kilometers up the road to Bansang and
take transport from there back to the ferry, although some
buses do go as far as the ferry. On to the ferry, pull
yourself across to MacCarthy island where transport will
be waiting to take you along the road into Georgetown.
By the ferry to the North bank there is a fallen tree that
has been sat on so much over the years that it appears to
be varnished. Find a cold beer and relax here, watching
the girls doing the weekly wash as the ferry comes and
goes.
Follow the road that passes
Armitage High School and it will lead you to the most
Western point on the island were the North and South
channels meet again. Armitage High School is a fee paying
school and you will find a lot of ex-pats working here,
particularly Canadian and American.
THE REST HOUSE is situated inside grounds of the
Commissioner's residence by the North bank ferry. Double
rooms with air conditioning at a very cheap, if
negotiable, price. You share the bathroom, air conditioned
lounge and kitchen. A great place to stay if you intend to
do your own cooking whilst in The Gambia.
ALAKABUNG LODGE is situated at the other end of the
main street and has thatched huts and shared showers, but
the price is right.
BAOBOLONG CAMP is situated on the East side of town
and has self contained double chalets at a very reasonable
price.
JANGJANG-BUREH CAMP is situated on the North bank
and can be reached from the ferry, then a five minute
walk, or by any of the private ferries that are hanging
around (price negotiable) which will take you directly to
the camp's jetty. Accommodation is in self contained
bungalows at an affordable price.
BIRD SAFARI CAMP A perfect
base for the traveller who is seeking a genuine holiday
experience in a beautiful natural setting. Hippo watching
trips, swimming pool, individual cottages & excellent
